Learn To Train The Good Dog Way: The Walk - Dog Training tips!
By Amanda Charl - 5:32 PM
Everybody has shot the good dog and we've got mr. Charlie over here and we're gonna be using Charlie for our learn to train the good dog way healing on leash so I'm gonna go through my my whole kind of protocol to get started with Charlie Charlie I just put a prong on just filled him with a small herm Sprenger I haven't done any work I've just let Charlie do his thing just kind of pull me around and he's not the worst puller in the world but he's definitely tuned out he's definitely kind of a in-home world which has a lot to do with why Charlie's got some behavior problems Charlie just arrived yesterday for growling and biting he's been a few people he's been one of the kids in the house pretty bad so that's a byproduct being tuned out being stressed being anxious.
You know the usual stuff you always hear me talking about the good dog way I'm not having enough leadership and guidance so we're going to start the process of getting him tuned in creating some leadership and guidance and starting to remove some of those layers that are causing him to behave the way that he does so I'm going to just demo some of the stuff what I'm going to do first is just introduce them to the prong so he gets used to the prong pressure it'll deescalate him a little bit not that he's like off his rocker right now but it'll get him a little bit less intense and teach them how to turn the pressure on and off or turn the pressure off I should say with the prong after that then I'll do some like start start to heal with them with some little leash pops.
The Good Dog Training and Rehabilitation
See how he responds to that if he works good with that then we'll go from there and cultivate a nice thing if so if the leash pops aren't giving me what I want he's tuned out needs ignoring them then I'll use 180s to bring the intensity down the mental intensity down where I can talk to them in a softer level with the little pom-poms so he'll really tell me what I need to do I I don't really anticipate a huge a huge struggle with him but nonetheless we'll just show you the the introductory process you guys can get a feel for it ready Charlie Brown let's go one drop go tension on the leash I'm just going to go the opposite direction basically just letting him get used to the pressure there you go give in to the pressure a little bit he's not incredibly determined he's not pulling hard on he's also not having any significant reactions to the prompt pressure.
So that's a good indicator for me if I've got a dog who gets you know this much pressure and starts to really unwind and uncork then I have to move really slow through this process of getting it acquainted with the prong so feels comfortable so I can start to communicate with it without having explosions or discomfort and added stress but you can see not too much problem with the Charlie feels pretty comfortable the prong crusher even though he's never been on one let him get out still tuned out there we go and this isn't anything cheaper fancy there we go nice to the prom pressure getting that related to it de-escalating him a little bit and teach him how to turn the pressure off just by getting into it pretty great so I can tell those guys that's really sensitive to the prom pressure so that means that I feel comfy then after this little bit of time of working with them.
Straight into little each box we're going to check that out they'll be really light but I'm just going to show him that I want to assume the spot alright so now we're going to just get the leash set first it's always our first order of business got kind of a long leash here so mainly what I'm looking for is the space between your hand and the collar right so this to me is too much this to me is too tight I'm not gonna be able to have a nice conversation with the dog there's going to be tension I want the tension to be there only when I want to communicate to the dog that they're doing something I don't like so reach down grab it like this fold the leash in half or in threes there we go now we got a cool thing a little bit of play if I need to to make a correction or communicate the dogs a very easy motion for me plus.
The Good Dog Play
I'm going to know the instant the dog gets disconnected from me so that's why I set it up like this so you're going to check it out just going to move a little bit and basically I'm going to cultivate a spot and I'm going to tell Charlie I need you right here and that spot is not over there not behind me not in front of me right here and that's going to be the first part of Charlie's relationship with me really getting into a solid space because I'm going to be demanding quite a bit of him I'm demanding that he's walking just like this and that he starts to ignore some of his impulses just to do whatever he wants so that's going to start create impulse control respect for me de-escalation the whole the whole kit and caboodle nothing me yakking let's check it out let's go No well you want to get on the other side so you can actually see these there we go so he's used to kind of just going wherever he wants so that's pretty normal he's like you know try behind me try going around you see.
I have my stand set of limbs if I can stop real quick and demo this for you guys so the way I've got my hand instead of I don't have it like a thumbs straight out and I don't have it come straight at myself I kind of put it right in the middle kind of aiming this way and for me that's just really comfortable when I want to give corrections learn to train the good dog way I'm going right behind my rear end to the side like this so I do a little wrist turn and an arm movement and that's how I do my my pops they're like this little wrist pop a little wrist twist maybe we get caught and a little bit of arm movement just to kind of create a little more whipping motion come on buddy let's go so I'm letting Charlie tell me how much pressure does he need to actually respond to what I'm asking so if Charlie was really intense he'd need a stronger pop or if he was really really intense.
I would just go to 180s and because it would be an easier thing for him to get tuned in and relaxed and work at lower levels but he's doing pretty well with pretty mild stuff here and there just a little reminders telling him what I wanted man so and it may look like sometimes I'm correcting them for nothing but there's actual little fluctuations I can feel let's turn so we don't get it too noisy of a spot here you can hop over here so like I said it may seem like sometimes I'm popping it for nothing but there's there's little things going on that I'm actually tuning into whether it's stop putting his nose towards the ground little movement that way little movement on the leash forward I really want this leash to look relaxed because when this gets like this I know that the dogs in a different mode as soon as I get like a consistent easy thing with this tiny bit of slack then I know that me and Charlie are pretty in tune and he's actually giving me a really nice state of mind which is a really good step towards making big progress with his behavior overall you Charlie's never really been asked much of.
Best Collar to Train Dog to Walk
So that that that's created a lot of the problems for Charlie so by asking more of him I actually start to cause him to relax and feel comfortable and he can just lean on me as the guy that's gonna kind of lead him through the world it'll cause him to make really good choices because if he got a comfy guy he's already doing great so interest how you doing see the ears up so I'm gonna correct for that basically I don't want him hyper focusing on anything I don't need him super intent or interested in anything I just want to relaxed for me the walk isn't for him to be that's that's Charlie being tense uncomfortable over excited to turn around again so I keep this away from a lot of car noise yeah so my job really the way I look at like walks is I'm really trying to cultivate a just a relaxed state of mind.
So I'm really focused on anytime I see Charlie not relaxed and comfortable I'm gonna help him out by tuning him in with a little reminder through the leash just relax I think of it less as a correction and I think it more of as as a conversation to say a reminder just relax as you can see none of these Corrections are very firm they're not really hard they're just enough for Charlie to feel comfortable and get to where I want him so I don't want to blow his mind with too much pressure but I also don't want to underwhelm him with too little so he doesn't take it serious if if I underwhelm him and he doesn't take it serious then I'm gonna leave Charlie stuck in this mental chasm where he of which he can extricate himself uh-huh so and that's not what I want from Charlie or for Charlie so I really want to help him out.
So it's my job to give just the right amount of pressure and just the right conversation for him to comfortably move out of that uncomfortable place into that but already we got a really nice thing going on see this leash no Morgan right so that's really what I like guys just a tiny bit of slack I know the moment the way I do it with the leaf like this I know the moment that probably gets distracted uncomfortable agitated freaked out and then I can just check him back in once again I'm just managing a state of mind so he gets excited he starts to move forward I know he's not comfortable and connected and tuned in so I remind him relax and then he turns slows down and gets in a good space so if you start to slow down.
I'm gonna just more motivation come on let's go if he's speeding up the last thing I'd be doing is giving him any kind of extra energy to to make him more peppy because and it's gonna make his life harder so a lot of people say and I reward him when I'm walking he's really good can I say good boy Charlie you can but you're gonna make his life really hard so if he's already an excited dog and he's struggling to maintain a nice heel don't make it harder for him by feeling more excitement which makes it more of a struggle for him to relax so if he's slowing down then I can add some excitement call my buddy good then I can speed him up but if he's already challenged with trying to slow down.
What is An a Collar for Dog Training?
You want to go in the opposite direction you want to pull charlie or your dog emotionally in the direction you want and typically I'll do that just by my own behavior so an excited dog gets a much more quiet serene relaxed Shawn and an antenna at a really cadaver esque slow not excited not motivated dog gets a more motivated Shawn so my job is to pull the dog in whichever direction I want Charley's pretty great right now I mean it's pretty much what everybody wants from a walk no pulling on the leash dogs connected tuned in love it and once again this is the real beginnings of transformation for Charlie.
It's not just old Charlie heels really nice on the leash that's great no it's about so much more it's about Charlie state of mind for the first time becoming relaxed comfortable tuned in and actually leaning and depending on a human for information this is profound stuff for Charlie okay everybody so that's on leash he'll armed with a with a fairly mild - you know - mellow dog he's not super severe and his pulling or in his reaction to the leash you but he's going to be a dog that a lot of people are still struggling with he still pulls around and does his stuff but more importantly is that that leash walk that.
That he'll that relaxing into what I'm asking is the very beginnings of Charlie getting to a point where he doesn't want to bite anymore so I really want you guys to grab onto that that this this is about much more than a walk this is about changing the state of mind by asking Charlie to do things in a way he's never done them before and causing him to relax and become comfortable so that's that's Onley shield um at some point we'll get a really gnarly dog and we'll be able to show you how to completely train your dog to work to really problem pulling stuff um I'm always looking for him but they they don't know it show up so anyways that's Charlie I'm Sean the good dog no more apologies we'll see you guys soon.
