What To Do When Your Dog Won't Come When Called

what to do when your dog won't come when called

Your dog, who does not come when called, is more than embarrassing. It is dangerous. Teaching your dog to come might save his life if he were there where he should not be, or if something unexpected happened.

Always reinforce the behavior with praise or rewards when it comes to you, whether you call or not. That's how he learns that it's good to come to your house. And if you are in a situation where your dog refuses to come occasionally (or all the time), you can be sure that you are not alone. Not so long ago I was there with my bulldog puppy.

It's best to return to the basics with the "Come" command.

Step 1 Begin with your command only when your dog is already moving towards you, and start it when you are only at the beginning. This teaches the dog that he "comes" when he approaches you. Usually I do this for 3-4 days just by using the "come" command when the dog comes to me.

Step 2 Repeat step 1, but add several times when your dog is tied up and walking towards you. The purpose of adding new locations is to make it clear to your dog that, no matter what your environment, you should always respond to "coming" in the same way. If you let him come to you, that means "come".

Step 3 Then repeat step 1 again, but now I'm taking that step outside and I'm always holding on to your dog. Just as in Step 1, say "Come" while your dog is already approaching you, and praise him for keeping walking toward you when you execute the command.

Start walking while the dog is tied up (most dogs instinctively follow). Then I turn around and go back. The dog comes to me. You can use the same strategy and use the Come command to increase the behavior. Usually I do this 3-4 times a day (during our daily walks) for about 4-5 days.

If your dog is reluctant to come back, let him hang on until he comes back when he calls.

With my English Bulldog puppy, I've put on a 10-foot harness so I can pull it a little when it gets stubborn. Then, when he learned to come to me at about thirty meters, I put a 20-foot strap on him and did some more training. Then I got creative and tied the 10 foot strap to the 20 foot strap to further remove it (know your dog ... my dog is a puppy, so I know I can not break the straps even if they were so connected)). After your dog has a permanent leash, you can start training without a leash.

Below I will describe one of the games I teach my dog to come to my house. It was especially useful to teach my english bulldog puppy. Anyone who's been with a bulldog knows he's nicknamed "Mobber" for a reason! They are independent and very persistent thinkers, especially because they have been educated to think for themselves without the signals of man. It's hard to make them do something if they do not show you the benefits ... and even if you do, you may not get the answer you need, depending on the day!

My bulldog Diamond taught me so much patience and perseverance that I respected her for that, though I did not want to learn that. This game will surely help you and your dog to control the command "Come".

TIP: Start playing this game on a leash, grab a 10-foot harness and continue. Then play in a fenced area. Only then can you try to play in a new or unfenced location.

Add a tag! They are that!
Kids play this game all the time. You probably did it as a kid too. Our version will be a bit biased. You will be the only one who is "tagged" and your dog will be the only one who "hunts". Let's assume your dog walks around your garden without a leash and without attention.

Climb behind him and try to give him a light and playful punch (some people take a pinch on his hips), then run off laughing and clapping. Once you see your dog following you, issue a "come" command to reinforce the action you've taken.

If it reaches you, which is not likely to last long, congratulate, play with it for a few seconds, then ignore it and go. Every time you get a "label, it's you", it's great. Your dog learns to follow you.
